Fashion at the Circus; A Freak Show

Thanks to the duo fashion photographers Pamela Reed and Matthew Rader (AKA Reed + Rader), Freak Show takes us on a whimsical journey held in a circus setting. Meet all the different performers in this animated fashion shoot.

This was a fun project for us as the content was specifically based on characters and their actions, something we always try to push.

Azzedine Alaia in the 21st Century

Tunisian-born Azzedine Alaia is one of the most important fashion designers of the last decades. Nicknamed the "King of Cling" Alaia practically invented the stretch mini, Lycra cycling shorts and the bodysuit that became inspiration to high street fashion design. His creations are considered by many to be the sexiest, trendiest, and most utterly original clothes produced by any contemporary designer. His tight dresses embrace the bodies of the world's most seductive and successful women.
Alaia's talent and reputation, spread largely by word of mouth, has won him the adoration of an extraordinary suite of faithful clients, among them Naomi Campbell, Tina Turner, Michelle Obama and Madonna.

From December 11, 2011 to May 6, 2012, the Groninger Museum will present the exhibition entitled Azzedine Alaia in the 21st century. This exhibition displays the most fantastic Alaia fashion creations of the last ten years, and focuses on various materials the designer has consistently used over the past decade: velvet, fur, wool, leather, cotton, animal skins, chiffon and knitwear.
A monograph will be published to accompany the exhibition compiled by curator Mark Wilson.

Slowly Seeping through my Hands; The Wearable Art of Nikoline Liv Andersen

Why should we live if we must die? It is one of the questions Danish artist Nikoline Liv Andersen puts us in  this exhibition. With a plethora of bodies, thick fabrics, flowers and fruits, life's transience is reflected upon, man in defense against death and the body in decomposition. Through baroque vanitas-settings and references to the myth of Sisyphus - society's eternal quest for financial abundance in a life that undoubtedly lose all worldliness at the end - the project expresses a life without meaning that will inevitably end.

Also on exhibit is the project The Dance of the Deaf and Dumb Eye where Nikoline Liv Andersen examines the theory of the classic Japanese monkeys that naively shut themselves out of the world by not seeing, not hearing and not speaking. Monkeys housed in wigs a la Marie Antoinette and clothing sculptures are visualized through a counterpart to the French court of Louis XVI, whose excessive exuberance and poor communication between nobility and the people led to the French Revolution. The monkeys symbolize today's blind consumer.

Nikoline Liv Andersen graduated as a fashion designer from the Danish Design School in 2006. She works in the borderland between fashion and art, and her unique creations are made of materials such as fur  and plastic. She lives and works in Copenhagen.
" Since I was little, I had an endless fascination with aesthetic and visual story telling. My heart is beating and my fingers are itching to dress and dress up. I see it as a duty and a great motivation to push the borders of what you are able to wear and not to dwell in the land of compromises where existing target groups are being pleased."
~~ Nikoline Liv Andersen

The exhibition presents two new installations of textile works and a selection of past creations. "Slowly Seeping through my Hands" is currently on view at Horsens Kunstmuseum in Denmark.

" Wonderland " viewed by Kirsty Mitchell

Fashion theme continues with the "Wonderland" series of UK based photographer and fashion designer Kirsty Mitchell.  A graduate with honors in fashion design at Ravensbourne College, Mitchell also completed two internships at the design studios of Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan, who both  have effected her greatly, and have given her a hunger for the extraordinary.

Not only Mitchell shoots amazing pictures, she also makes her own props, costumes and sets. She spends a huge amount of time walking in forests, and driving around randomly, to scout the locations. Color and environment are vital to her work.

"The stories my mother read to me as a child and their illustrations inspired me greatly, and are the root of almost everything I create."

Discover the imaginary world of Kirsty Mitchell, a world of beauty, field of dreams, blooming flowers....

Wun Wun Nova Chiu: " A Shangri-La collection "

For her BA final major project at The London College of Fashion (LCF), the 24-year-old Nova Chiu used her homeland of Shangri-La as her main source of inspiration. As described in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by British author James Hilton, Shangri-La is a mystical, harmonious valley, an earthly paradise isolated from the outside world.
Chiu's collection comprises all aspects of life in Shangri-La, such as clothing, the arts, landscape, and architecture. The results are modernized and colorful garments shaped in the form of Chinese architecture, inverted A-Line and Oval, all taken from traditional temples and houses.
Accessories such as bells have all been hand stitched on most of the outfits, especially on the fur coats. Jade and wooden beads, sequins, tapestry prints are featured in the entire collection.

A striking F/W 2012 collection for Nova Chiu, LCF's winner of Collection of the Year 2011.
