Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones

Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones - a collaboration between the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and Stephen Jones, the world's foremost hat designer - is  currently on view at the Bard Graduate Center (BGC) in New York City. The exhibition held for the first time in this country, displays more than 250 hats chosen by the master milliner.

On display are hats ranging from a 12th century Egyptian fez to a 1950s Balenciaga hat and couture creations by Jones and his contemporaries. The designer spearheaded the fashionable revival of British millinery in the early 1980s. Using unusual materials and daring designs, his exquisitely crafted hats have pushed the boundaries of hat design forward for more than three decades.

" I was honored when the V&A asked me to curate an exhibition about hats. I had so much fun finding unique head decoration in the most interesting places. This exhibition draws on millinery collections world-wide and is truly an eclectic and exciting anthology of hats from the last millennium to the present day." --Stephen Jones

Hats vs Wigs, Florian Dovillez's Hat Collection

These are not the Mad hats worn at the Royal Ascot 2011, but are the outstanding work of French hair stylist Florian Dovillez. As a fashion lover Dovillez made his way towards hairdressing with the only objective of unleashing all the creativity within him.

In 2011, Florian Dovillez launched his first hat collection in collaboration with stylist Anna Note, whose  clothes were created out of synthetic hair, fine fabrics and wool. The hats are made of 100% human hair, some dyed black, others bleached blonde. The idea was to be able to curl, flat iron or style the hat as it was part of your own hair. Dovillez's goal is to create various volumes of the wearer's actual hair, blurring the lines between what is real and what isn't.

With weight and body, as well as flowing silhouettes, the results are of a timeless beauty. Photographer Riki Tinoza captures the striking Hat Collection in a series of beautiful and ethereal images.

Florian Dovillez lives and works in Montreal.

Hats in the Royal Wedding

Jess Collett is a milliner in London, who is probably making headlines this week for the wedding hat that she is not creating - that of Carole Middleton who changed her wedding outfit at the last minute, making a co-ordinating hat unnecessary.

The young talented designer is making hats for quite a few of the other guests however. She is in a unique position, being privileged to what the guests will be wearing. The invitation forbids decorations; such as flowers or feathers, since the hats will be worn in church. Consequently most of the pieces Jess Collett will be making are bigger hats.

Although, we don't have any images of the hats that Jess is creating for the big event, below are some images of her recent creations, in collaboration with Ercole Moroni, a florist / designer. These fabulous pieces are made of wood, perspex, and silk flowers.
