Cooper & Gorfer: " My Quiet of Gold," a journey in rural Kyrgyzstan

Cooper & Gorfer consists of the two artists Sarah Cooper (USA, 1974) and Nina Gorfer (Austria, 1979). With their backgrounds in art, architecture, graphic design and photography, they began their collaboration in 2006. Their work belongs to a narrative tradition within photography existing at the intersection of contemporary photography and 18th and 19th century painting. Place and story are the catalysts of their work, transforming narrative and memories into images that are digitally processed to create painterly collages.

For their exhibition My Quiet of Gold, Cooper and Gorfer traveled to the rural areas of Kyrgyzstan to collect sagas and stories in conversations and interviews with local inhabitants. Out of these tales, the duo created striking photographic portraits that go far beyond mere documentation to tell and visually interpret romantic-melancholy stories of love, sorrow, and betrayal in a completely new and non-linear ways.

"Like the portrait in Oscar Wilde's novel 'The Picture of Dorian Grey', our images show more than just an objective view of the person portrayed. Instead, they also depict something we cannot see - the past, the insubstantial and intangible, where the life and sentiment of the person photographed are woven together with our perception and experience of the moment. In the end, our pictures are the stories' beautiful remains."
~~ Cooper & Gorfer

Sarah Cooper and Nina Gorfer live and work in Gothenburg, Sweden.

My Quiet of Gold is an exhibition from the renowned Hasselblad Foundation in Gothenburg, and is currently on view at Gestalten Space, Berlin. A book of the same name has also been published, and is available through the gallery.

Audrey a Roma. Esterno giorno: An Exhibition and A Book

This is a follow up on a previous post, La Dolce Vita, Stars and Celebrities in the Italian Fifties.

From her very first performance on film in 1948 as an airline stewardess to her last one in 1989 as an angel, Audrey Hepburn withstood over forty years of artistic scrutiny. Today she remains the irrefutable personification of irresistible charm, grace and dignity.

On the fiftieth anniversary of Breakfast at Tiffany's, and simultaneously with the Rome International Film Festival, the eternal city will be honoring Audrey Hepburn for the first time with a tribute-exhibit at the Ara Pacis Museum. This celebration of the actress and humanitarian in "her" Rome will raise funds for UNICEF's project to fight child malnutrition, in conjunction with the Club Amici di Audrey. Hepburn devoted the last years of her life to serving as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

The exhibition contains images, videos and personal objects that recall the three lives Hepburn lived in Rome: as an actress, mother and UNICEF Ambassador. It coincides with the release of a book also titled Audrey a Roma and published by Mondadori. The photographic essay is featuring around 200 photos, snap shots rather than poses,  portraying the actress during her daily life, strolling around the city with her dogs, with her family, with her children.

The exhibit is curated by Audrey Hepburn's son, Luca Dotti, together with Ludovica Damiani, Sciascia Gambaccini and Guido Torlonia, with the consultancy of Sava Bisazza Terracini.

"Each city in its own way was... unforgettable. It would be difficult to... Rome; by all means, Rome.
I will cherish my visit here, in memory, for as long as I live."

Iain McKell: The New Gypsies

London based photographer Iain McKell offers an extraordinary glimpse into the lives of a real and raw group of present-day nomads whose culture is built around ideals of freedom, nature, and simplicity. The New Gypsies are British horse drawn travelers. The movement began in 1986 when a group of Post-Punk Anti-Thatcher protesters headed out of London into the English countryside.

Iain McKell spent the last ten years documenting and living with travelers of all ages: parents, children, couples and loners. His use of fashion aesthetics, a romanticized pallet of colors, and his intentional rejection of many of the visual traits of traditional documentary photography, offers a beautiful series of photographs of this invisible and ignored community.

Known for his work around youth subculture, Iain McKell's photographs have appeared in numerous major publications such a i-D, V, Italian Vogue and Sunday Times.

Northern Women in CHANEL

The visionary duo, photographer Peter Farago and stylist Ingela Klemetz-Farago, belongs to one of the most creative teams of today's fashion photography. As part of a unique collaboration with Chanel in 2010 and 2011, the Faragos created full fashion stories featuring 46 supermodels from the Nordic and Baltic countries.

Freja Beha Erichsen, Helena Christensen, Sigrid Agren, Siri Tollerod, Frida Gustavsson and Caroline Winberg are just a few of the women involved in the project. The models have been carefully chosen to represent an aesthetic flair for fashion but also a desire to convey a sense of humanity.

This exclusive collaboration has resulted in a lavish book and a traveling photography exhibition throughout the world. Profits from sales of the book will be donated to the organization Save the Children.

These photographs not only celebrate the fascinating designs they record, but also produce sensational reinventions, demonstrating how fashion, photography and art can come together.

The centre of contemporary photography Fotografiska, in Stockholm, will be the starting point of this inspirational fashion journey. The opening of the exhibition and the book launch party will take place on June 30th, 2011. Northern Women in CHANEL will be published by Farago Publishing and sold in a limited edition, as of July 2011.

Olivier Martel: " Femmes Eternelles, Women throughout the world "

Over 35 years of photo-journalism, French photographer Olivier Martel has discovered many fascinating cultures. He became interested in subjects such as the nomadic tribes of Northern Africa, Ivory Coast fortune-tellers, the Order of Malta throughout the world, malaria across continents, Orthodox religion in Russia, the Cistercian Order in Europe and more.....
Among all these faces that crossed Martel's path, several marked him for life. He was able to photograph women, far from the cliches of fashion. His aim was to show an honest portrayal of each of these women, in their daily combats. He found the same grace among the peasant women of Guatemala as among Khmer dancers or Moroccan fortune-tellers. Today it is this work that Olivier Martel wishes to share.

" Femmes Eternelles, Women throughout the world " is a series of portraits that capture women in their intimate moments, and reveal their unique beauty and individuality.
" Femmes Eternelles " is the 24th exhibition to be hosted by the French Senate on the railings of the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. The exhibition features 80 photographs and coincides with the publication of " Femmes Eternelles," by Editions Philippe Rey.
