The Stunning Art of Gemma Land; Metamorphosis, A Photographic Series

Fusing photographic art with fashion, award-winning British artist Gemma Land draws inspiration from architecture, using symmetry to create impossible structures and hallucinogenic patterns. Her aesthetic lies between the romantic and gothic, with stunning imagery. Gemma is keen to push the boundaries of photographic print in fashion and exhibit her artwork in galleries around the world.

Gemma Land's first collection, Bourgeois Utopias, features digitally printed black-and-white images of English suburban houses. Her second collection of print silk scarves is a series of monochrome and color prints of London's much-loved Strawberry Hill House. Printed with the finest quality and hand finished in Britain, the Strawberry Hill collection features Land's unique style, fusing her photographic art with the function of scarves.

Gemma Land is one to watch: she has won recently the Wolf & Badger Graduate Design award and she was shortlisted at the 2011 Fashioning The Future Awards.

For the Strawberry Hill collection, the artist collaborated with film-maker Xu Ming Long Tong to create a set of images inspired by Land's designing methods. The results are these stunning metamorphic shapes.

Gemma Land: " Modern Art on Silk "

They are unique, made of 100% silk crepe and add a touch of sophistication to any outfit. Bourgeois Utopia is a line of gorgeous scarves printed with black-and-white images from London-based photographer Gemma Land and produced by The Creatives Archives (TCA), a platform for driven emerging talent.

Since graduating in 2009 with an MA in Photography from London College of Communication, Gemma Land has shown her varied portfolio of work in galleries in the UK and Internationally. She is interested in the ideology and socio-political structures within residential and public architecture.
With influences such as Bernd and Hilla Becher, Andy Warhol, Francesca Woodman and Eugene Atget, her photographs of suburban houses feature an unsettling symmetry. Gemma also takes inspiration from the Gothic, Baroque, and Surrealism art movements.

Gemma Land has won the Creatives Archives Award that enabled her to cross boundaries between fashion, art and photography, and launched her first collection of scarves at London and Paris A/W10 fashion week.

Wearable Art: Hermes " Carre d'artiste "

The emblematic silk scarf by Hermes undergoes a dramatic transformation once again after having launched its first edition " Carre d'artiste" in 2008 with "Homage to the Square" by Josef Albers. For its second edition, Hermes has collaborated with French conceptual artist Daniel Buren, known for his sculpure in the courtyard of the Palais Royal, in Paris " Les Deux Plateaux " also referred to as the Colonnes de Buren,  and for his installation of striped posters around Paris and in more than 100 metro stations. Now Buren has his bright bands of color on 36 square inches of hand-hemmed Hermes silk twill. The capsule collection is called " Photos-souvenirs au carre,"a limited edition of print scarves, inspired by the artist's random "photos-souvenirs," snapshots of nature or architectural details from his travels all over the world. A piece from Buren's edition will run around $6,800.

As a material, silk is hyperactive, soft, vibrant, and transparent. In a word, it's sensual. When it is animated by a human body, all its qualities become apparent, Burden says.

The artworks from ‘Photos-souvenirs au carré’ will be presented during the week of the Fiac in partnership with the Kamel Mennour gallery and La Monnaie de Paris, at La Monnaie de Paris – 11 quai de Conti – Paris 75006 from October 20th to November 7th 2010.
