Le Grand Bal, DIOR

Invitation to "LE GRAND BAL".

The Christian Dior Museum in Granville will for the first time ever bring together over 50 Dior ball gowns for the new exhibition “The Dior Grand Ball”, from May 13 to September 26, 2010.
This remarkable new exhibition places the universe and creations of Chris- tian Dior—haute couture, accessories and fragrances from the House of Dior, plus paintings, photographs, archive films and literary works—in a unique context: the history of balls, from the 18th century to the present. The exhibition is a tribute to Christian Dior himself, showcasing his talent and refinement, and his love of sumptuous costumes, expressed in creations for the grand balls of the post-war period.

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo History, Tradition and Celebration.
Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a voluntarily observed holiday that commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. It is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States. While Cinco de Mayo has limited significance nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

This post is all about Mexican culture.

Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston

Tribeca Film Festival - New York

The documentary focuses on the life and times of Roy Halston Frowick, the Iowa-born designer who as a milliner in Chicago in the 1950s made hats for Kim Novak andDeborah Kerr. Later, as confidante to celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and Liza Minnelli, Halston became a star in his own right, the epitome of Studio 54 glamour. The film touches on the designer’s drug use and his business misfortunes. He lost control of the Halston name in the 1980s, and died of complications from AIDS in 1990.

Daphne Guinness : MNEMOSYNE

Last year, Daphne Guinness not only launched her first scent, MNEMOSYNE, in collaboration with Comme des Garcons, she also directed a film to go with it. Rightly, Daphne points out that it’s not a promo ad for the perfume, but a stand-alone art piece. It features no logos and names and is merely "inspired by the essence of the scent". In collaboration with All Day Everyday, Daphne co-directed a three-minute long film with David Parker, full of subtle colours, floral references and fluid movements. All the hard work appears to have paid off; not only was the perfume a hit in Dover Street Market, but MNEMOSYNE has also been nominated for a Webby Award in the 'Experimental' category.
